Understanding acupuncture: ancient wisdom, modern relevance

Acupuncture is one of the world’s oldest healing systems, refined over thousands of years and increasingly valued in modern healthcare.
Using ultra-fine, sterile needles, it works with your body’s natural rhythms to restore balance, ease pain, and calm the nervous system – helping you reconnect with a sense of wellbeing and vitality.
Modern research shows acupuncture can:

Release endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers)

Improve blood flow and reduce inflammation

Influence hormone balance and immune response

Calm the nervous system and reduce stress

Acupuncture is suitable for people of all ages and can be safely used alongside other forms of treatment or medication. It’s often chosen by those who want a more natural, holistic approach to health.

Miranda’s integrated approach

At Miranda Kaula Acupuncture, treatments draw on both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Five Element acupuncture – two distinct yet complementary systems that together create a more complete approach to care.

TCM acupuncture focuses on patterns of disharmony within the body, helping to relieve pain, fatigue, digestive issues, and acute concerns by restoring balance in the flow of qi (vital energy).

Five Element acupuncture explores emotional and constitutional wellbeing, working with the deeper energetic patterns that shape your health and resilience.

Together, these methods allow me to treat both immediate symptoms and the underlying causes – supporting lasting balance and harmony in both body and mind.

A closer look at acupuncture

Ancient wisdom, modern relevance

Acupuncture is one of the oldest known forms of medicine, with origins tracing back over 2,500 years. Rooted in Taoist philosophy and empirical observation, it views health as harmony between body, mind, and environment.

This holistic perspective is just as relevant today, offering a safe, drug-free way to treat a wide range of physical and emotional concerns.

Each treatment is tailored to the individual – addressing the root cause of imbalance as well as the symptoms. Acupuncture can be used independently or alongside conventional medicine to complement existing care.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

TCM acupuncture is based on balancing the flow of qi (vital energy) through a network of channels in the body. When qi becomes blocked or depleted, pain and illness may follow. Stimulating specific acupuncture points restores this flow, supporting the body’s ability to heal itself and maintain wellbeing.

Five Element acupuncture

Five Element acupuncture focuses on the emotional and constitutional aspects of health. It works with the five elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – which correspond to different organ systems and emotional states. By identifying which element is most out of balance, treatment helps restore harmony across all levels of your being.
